The embrace of the FIA’s GT3 class by the World Endurance Championship has resulted in a full grid of GT machinery and the departure of LMP2 for all races except Le Mans this season.
WEC fans will need follow only two categories during races—the hybrid prototypes and the new LMGT3 class. Due to the length of the race and the traditional large field, the LMP2s will compete at Le Mans as well as in other championship series such as European Le Mans.
After the successful launch of the prototype categories of Hypercar and the LMDh, the change became a necessity, said Frederic Lequien, the CEO of the WEC.
“Following the growing success of the Hypercar class, we were forced to take some tough decisions,” Lequien said in an interview with Total Energies. “Like any championship, we have to adapt and move with the times. This doesn’t mean that LMP2 has disappeared altogether.
“It is still the elite class of the European Le Mans Series (ELMS), the FIA WEC’s promotional formula, and the LMP2 class will still be contested at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The LMP2 teams and drivers have provided some spectacular on-track racing for many years and we are very grateful to them for that.”
