- Organizers want to boost spectator capacity at Formula 1’s Miami Grand Prix next year to a three-day total of 300,000.
- Such a boost would mean a 25 percent increase over its inaugural race in 2022 when attendance stood at 240,000.
- Other changes to the event would be minor; the layout of the 3.36-mile circuit will remain the same, and the race will likely not switch to a night race.
Organizers of Formula 1’s Miami Grand Prix will increase daily capacity at its 2024 round to 100,000 spectators as it seeks to expand its event.
Miami joined Formula 1’s schedule in 2022 with the semi-permanent Miami International Autodrome constructed on the campus around the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.
Attendance in its inaugural round was 240,000—80,000 per day—while this year’s round in May welcomed 270,000 spectators, with capacity around 90,000 per day.
Tickets go on sale today for Miami’s 2024 round—scheduled as the sixth round of the season from May 3-5—following the recent release of next year’s Formula 1 calendar, and there will be an increase in the available numbers.
“We are delighted to be able to release tickets for next year’s race so early,” said Tyler Epp, president of the Miami Grand Prix. “This year’s race built on the foundations of our first event and took the spectator experience to a new level, which we aim to further for 2024.”
Organizers of the grand prix also revealed that an independently commissioned economic report concluded that the local Miami economy benefited by $449 million from the 2023 event.
That was an increase of 29 percent compared to 2022 bringing the race’s overall contribution so far across the first two years to $798 million.
“We were happy with year two, we felt good about the improvements we made,” Epp said during a media roundtable at the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday.
Changes Will Be Minor
Miami’s 2024 event is still over nine months away, but evolutions to the campus are already taking place.
“We’ll see some grandstand expansion, particularly along the start/finish line and Turn 1,” said Epp.
“We continue to see strong demand and interest from the US audience, and good early interest from the international audience, so we’re hoping to continue to see a diversity of fan coming to Miami.
“We’ll continue to evolve, through the first two years we’ve established a foundation, we’ve learned a lot—we’ve made some mistakes—but we feel much better about the foundation, it doesn’t mean we have it all figured it out, but now we can start to build on that. You won’t see huge changes on the campus for 2024, but many of our consistent pieces will stay the same.”
Epp added that Miami retains an interest in hosting an F1 Sprint race in 2024 but outlined that switching the event to a night race is highly unlikely.
The layout of the 3.36-mile circuit will not be altered; it has remained unchanged since its 2022 debut but was fully repaved prior to the 2023 race after complaints of bumps and off-line grip following its inaugural round.
