NTT IndyCar officials on Sunday morning at Laguna Seca announced a $1 million non-points exhibition race to be held next March 22-23 at The Thermal Club near Palm Springs, California, to wrap up its second straight year of spring training at the private road course.
“The experience the teams had at The Thermal Club was second to none,” said IndyCar president Jay Frye. “We treated it like a preseason scrimmage, and, looking back, it was the perfect launch to this record-breaking season. The facility is spectacular, and we cannot wait to return and showcase IndyCar in a whole new way.”
Ironically, the spring training event will come AFTER the season opener on the streets of St. Petersburg (Fla.), expected to be either March 10 or 17. That would be like Major League Baseball starting its season and then return to spring training games afterward.
All IndyCar teams will be required to participate in the exhibition. A limited number of tickets will be sold for fans to attend.
