Former Formula 1 driver and current Mercedes F1 reserve Mick Schumacher is in the running to link up with Alpine for its upcoming World Endurance Championship project.
Schumacher, who raced for the Haas F1 Team in 2021-22, joined Mercedes as its reserve driver for 2023 but his distant hopes of returning to Formula 1 full-time in 2024 have now faded. Alpine will return to the top flight of WEC in 2024, with its A424, designed for the Hypercar category—and the 24-year-old Schumacher is in the running for a seat.
“It’s true that we are talking with Mick about the possibility to race in our endurance program with the A424,” said Alpine’s interim team principal Bruno Famin. “It would be a good opportunity for both parties, I think, but for the time being we are just talking and hopefully we will organize a test soon.”
It is understood that Mercedes is planning to keep Schumacher on its books and that if he does land an Alpine WEC seat he will be able to undertake both roles.
