Let’s say you decide to pack up your 2023 Ford Bronco or Jeep JK Wrangler for a rustic mountain overlanding camping trip with family and friends. You reach your destination and set up camp and look for more trails to take your vehicle on. But, what if there was another way to keep the trailblazing party going without using a drop of fuel? That is where the Dragonfly comes in. Dreamed up by CEO Jez Williman, the Dragonfly is a four-wheeled electric scooter with a patented “3D steering” system that allows the rider to lean into turns and carve corners in a fashion similar to skateboarders and snowboarders.
Williman came up with the concept for the Dragonfly while recovering from a serious injury that limited his mobility for an extended period of time. Wanting a personal EV that was more engaging than the other electric scooters and skateboards on the market he came up with the Dragonfly’s 3D four-wheel-steering system and paired it with an independent suspension system that utilizes eight springs. That kind of set up makes it perfect for taking the Dragonfly on dirt and other rough terrain. In fact, there are two different tire sets—which can be changed in just a few moments according to Williman—available for just such occasions.
Once we learned that, we couldn’t help but think about how great this scooter would be on camping trips and overlanding excursions. Due to generous use of carbon fiber and the ability to fold, the Dragonfly is light (80 pounds) and compact enough to throw in the back of your vehicle of choice. Williman says the battery is good for roughly 50 miles of range and the two hub motors in the front wheels can get the scooter up to 25 mph if the user chooses the fastest “D3” mode. There are two other modes: D1 and D2 which have slower top speeds which is useful for beginners or navigating tight areas.
The Dragonfly is set to release sometime in April 2023 with a starting price of roughly $3,900, if you’re feeling the idea of having a super-fast torque-y electric scooter accessorize your overlander.
