Buick is one of four brands that survived GM’s bankruptcy filing in 2009, along with Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac. The streamlined post-bankruptcy GM shed Saturn, Hummer, Pontiac, and Saab. Keeping Buick raised some eyebrows, given its relatively low volume of sales in North America. But the brand was a success in China, the largest car market in the world, where Buick rose to prominence because it was favored by important political figures and dignitaries.
