2024 Mazda CX-50 Gets Better but Costs More

We just wrapped up our yearlong loan with a Mazda CX-50 compact SUV, coming away with plenty of praise but a few lasting complaints about its ride quality on bigger wheels. Mazda appears to be addressing our concerns directly with the 2024 Mazda CX-50, which gets new dampers and an updated steering system, but it seems the price has also now gone up as a result.

The current Mazda website lists the CX-50 S trim as unavailable, and it’s not listed for the 2024 model year either, so it must be gone for good. That makes the 2.5 S Select trim the new base model, but the price for that trim has still gone up compared to last year. The base price for the CX-50 2.5 S Select trim now starts at $31,675 including destination—up from the outgoing base price of $28,925 for the S and $30,325 for the next-level S Select that’s listed on the old Mazda website.

Two engines are still available; a naturally-aspirated Skyactiv-G 2.5-liter I-4 that makes 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, or a turbocharged 2.5-liter I-4 unit good for 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque on 87 octane gas, or as much as 256 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque on premium 93 octane gas. All powertrains are linked to a six-speed automatic transmission. Turbo models start at $39,475. The naturally-aspirated models are good to tow up to 2,000 pounds with the available towing accessories, and turbo models are capable of up to 3,500 pounds.
