A Rivian R1T electric pickup truck apparently caught fire while parked next to an Electrify America charging station in Mill Valley, Calif., with the Southern Marin Fire Department responding. Both Rivian and Electrify America are investigating the incident, but images appear to show the fire was contained to the front of the truck, where the charge port is located.
The situation has already been reported on Reddit and CarScoops. Based on images and Rivian’s initial assessment, the vehicle’s high-voltage battery doesn’t not appear to be directly involved in the fire, which was focused near the front. The images show significant damage to the Rivian, with evidence of fire spreading across the entire hood of the vehicle, a broken windshield, and charring all the way up on the top of the EA station charger, so the flames must have reached quite far. The images also appear to show the charging cable laying on the ground.
Unfortunately, details are limited at this time. Rivian and EA confirm that no injuries were reported. The responding Fire Department hadn’t posted about the incident on social media at the time of reporting. It’s clear from the images that the vehicle was towed away, but we’re not sure where.
We’ll update more on the Mill Valley incident as we get new information. Photos of the this week’s Rivian fire were provided by a friend of the site.
