A new motorsports facility due to open in Tennessee in 2024 will feature a 30-degree banked corner as part of its 5.9-mile 34-turn layout.
The Flatrock Motorsports Park, designed by famed F1 circuit designer Hermann Tilke, will feature a 3.5-mile private members ‘Club’ circuit and it will also have a 2.67-mile track certified for FIM competitions and to FIA Grade 2 standard for motorsport. Tilke also designed Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, and his company resurfaced the Miami Grand Prix race circuit.
Flatrock is being constructed in Rockwood, Tenn., close to I-40, about 50 miles west of Knoxville
Paving begun at Flatrock in August and the first layer is due to be completed by the end of 2023, with the final two layers to be laid in early 2024.
The USA’s newest motorsports facility will have a clubhouse for members, alongside a restaurant, while long-term plans include a hotel, brewery, a retail centre and an amphitheatdr to host live concerts and other events. A CIK-level karting facility is also due to be constructed.
It is also understood that Flatrock is in advanced discussions with major motorsport categories—not Formula 1—to hold international-level championship events.
“I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone working on this monumental project,” said Flatrock founder Rusty Bittle. “We have had to face heavy rains, extreme heat and many more obstacles in our path but the team never wavered in its desire to build what we believe will be one of the most spectacular circuits not only in the U.S. but the whole world.
“As we reflect on the last year with a sense of pride and satisfaction, we also know that there is much more to be done. The next few months will see the completion of the Club track paving, taking us ever closer to the day when we will experience cars on track here at Flatrock. Until that day, we will keep driving forward together.”
One corner at Flatrock will include a 30-degree banking.
