Pirelli will continue to be the sole provider of tires to the Formula 1 series through at least 2027.
The FIA on Tuesday announced a three-year extension covering 2025 through 2027 that will keep Pirelli in F1, along with F2 and F3. It was reported earlier that Bridgestone had also made a bid to bring its tires to the series.
The deal, which was recommended by the Formula 1 Commercial Rights Holder, also includes an option year for 2028.
The FIA adds that Pirelli’s commitment to environmental sustainability for the life cycle of the tires factored into the decision. Beginning in 2024, all tires used in FIA Formula 1 will be certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.
“Pirelli has been operating at the top level of motor sport for many years and I am sure that they will continue to deliver innovation and excellence on the world stage,” said FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem. “Formula 1 is a unique challenge for the tire supplier, and Pirelli has demonstrated great commitment to producing tires that meet the extreme demands of these incredible cars.
“I would like to thank Pirelli for its ongoing support of motor sport not only in Formula 1, but in many other championships and categories at every level. Work will continue in the coming years to take further strides both in terms of performance and sustainability, and Pirelli have made strong commitments to both of these targets.”
Pirelli was a tire supplier for the first Formula 1 races in 1950. It has been the sole provider of tires to the series since 2011. Bridgestone was the series’ tire supplier from 2007-10. Prior to that was a a six-year run where both Bridgestone and Michelin were active in the series.
