We know far more about what’s going on beneath the R2S’ skin. Unlike the R1S and related R1T pickup, the new R2S won’t sport a quad-motor powertrain. Rivian engineers will instead fit the electric SUV with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup as standard, while higher-spec variants will feature three motors—one at the front axle and two driving the rear. The standard battery hardware will likely be Rivian’s Standard Pack with about 100 kWh of capacity, while tri-motor variants should get the 135-kWh Large Pack. The R1 models’ 180-kWh Max Pack probably won’t appear here.
Like with its big brothers, we suspect off-road capability to be a big selling point for the R2S. We’d be surprised to find the R1’s trick hydropneumatic suspension in the R2, but expect to find multiple off-road drive modes for various terrain and smart software tuning to help its owners explore well off the beaten path.
