A week ago, the noted car designer Henrik Fisker posted to Instagram that his all-new all-electric SUV, the 2024 Fisker Ocean, was advertising 356 miles of range at a full charge, among other posts showing various Ocean SUVs on the factory floor as the company ramps up for full production. Just a few days later, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published its range estimate for the new model that bests even Fisker’s most efficient benchmark competitor, the Tesla Model Y. Critically, the U.S. government has also officially cleared the Ocean for sale, with U.S. deliveries supposed to begin this month.
Of course, the Fisker Ocean will eventually be available in various trims and configurations, which means each unique model’s range could vary. For the EPA estimation, we’re looking at the 2024 Fisker Ocean Extreme, featuring a 113-kWh “Hyper Range” battery pack and all-wheel drive riding on 20-inch wheels. The EPA has yet to provide estimates for the full Ocean range. Available 22-inch wheels are said to have a minimal but noticeable impact on range of a few miles, based on European WLTP testing with the two different wheel options.
In Europe, the most efficient available Fisker Ocean was previously rated on the WLTP cycle to achieve an estimated 707 kilometers, or roughly 440 miles of range on a full charge, which makes it the longest-range EV sold on the continent over there. But the WLTP cycle is commonly inflated compared to real-world range results for various reasons, and the EPA traditionally provides a more conservative estimate, but one that lines up closer with Fisker’s real-world results (as shared on Henrik Fisker’s Instagram).
The Ocean Extreme (and the One launch edition) comes with two e-motors, one motor mounted to each axle, with a disconnect for higher-speed cruising to maintain better powertrain efficiency using only one motor to keep the car at speed, rather than needlessly powering both at all times. The motors generate a combined 468 horsepower and 513 lb-ft of torque, but can “Boost” to 564 hp and 543 lb-ft for short bursts.
The Extreme is priced at $68,999 before federal and local incentives and pending the U.S. delivery fee, which has yet to be announced (the vehicle is produced in Austria). The most affordable Fisker Ocean Sport trim comes with a rear-mounted single electric motor good for 250 miles and starts at $37,499 before incentives and fees. Henrik Fisker claimed on Instagram that U.S. deliveries of the Launch Edition models would begin by the end of June this year.
